Losing My Closest Friend – Joe Lauria Blog

In all my years of doing a weather blog, I never thought I’d have to write a blog like this about my closest friend in KC, but here goes, and I apologize ahead of time if it rambles on, I also apologize if it’s not as eloquent as it could be and I promise I’ll get to the weather aspect of the blog over the weekend.

I’ve been away, actually in Northern Michigan for the past 5 days or so attending the funeral of my wife’s grandmother who passed away. She made it to 101 ½ and lead a very full life.  I was driving back to attend a funeral for a person who, at best, lived only half his life and didn’t see everything he had and he had so much, or could’ve had. In a sense I was “insulated” by distance from the pain my coworkers went through this week, especially Mike and Karli and for that I’m very sorry. There are so many tributes to my friend, I haven’t seen any of them. If this is repetitive, again my apologies. All I can do is write from my heart.

Gentleness of Children Strengthens Don’s Friends

All of you who have lost someone you love know that grief can swell up unexpectedly. As Mark and Loren, Nick, Bill, Karli, and Stefan and the rest of the morning and FOX 4 news family work through this difficult time, the cards and messages from viewers are immensely encouraging.

We thank you for grieving with us and for sharing your stories and condolences.

Friday morning, Mark, Loren and Karli shared that the sweetness and innocence of Don’s daughter also helps them through.

The Flat Donnie Story

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Flat Donnie traveled the country and the world and became another famous alter-ego of FOX 4 Meteorologist Don Harman. No one realized at the time he was “created” that Flat Donnie would become so popular. Mark and Loren actually made the Flat Donnie paper-like doll as a joke; teasing among very good friends.

Don’s Family Shares His Fight with Depression

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Don Harman’s family wants people to know that Don struggled with depression. It was a life-long fight and he tried many ways to treat it.

They urge anyone who faces depression to continue to fight it and find the right treatment. They agreed to allow Don’s friends to talk about it on FOX 4 Morning News.
